E-commerce drives growth in logistics industry jobs
Delivery and logistics firms added thousands of jobs during July, which enables e-commerce companies to ship higher order volume and reach more customers across the US:
Trucking companies added 1,700 jobs during July. This will help grow the volume of orders being shipped around the country to warehouses and fulfillment centers.
Warehousing and storage companies added 2,600 jobs last month. Growing employment in warehousing means that e-tailers will have more help in quickly sorting and sending out orders for e-commerce customers.
Courier and messenger firms added 1,800 jobs last month. This will help drastically decrease friction in the last mile, as drivers will be able to deliver packages in localized areas rather than handling a high volume of orders over larger regions.
While delivery logistics firms increase employment to aid e-commerce fulfillment, retailers in the US are scrambling to lease warehouse space to store inventory. Companies leased approximately 70 million square feet of industrial space during Q2 2016, which was the most recorded in the past 30 years, and represented 6% year-over-year (YoY) growth, notes The Wall Street Journal, citing a report from Cushman & Wakefield Inc.
